Stations of the Cross - London Churches
As part of our learning and preparation for Holy Week, our Year 5 and 6 children were joined by St Helen’s on a pilgrimage around central London for a challenging Stations of the Cross service where they journeyed by foot to 11 different Catholic churches, including the Ukrainian Cathedral and St Ethelreda’s the oldest Catholic church in England. At each church the children read one of the stations scripture and a prayer to contemplate on the different parts of Jesus’ journey to the cross. They then all reflected on how this could impact on their own lives. In particular the Year 6 showed an amazing level of resilience as it rained throughout the pilgrimage in which they completed over 25,000 steps and travelled over 6 miles. The children's journey took them from Farringdon through, Hatton Garden, Lincolns Inn Fields, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, China Town, Soho, Mayfair and finally back to Tottenham Court Road. As a result the children were better placed to understand Jesus' terrible journey with the cross. Despite the challenges, the children very much enjoyed and appreciated visiting so many various Catholic Churches in the heart of our capital city, London.
