Poetry By Heart 2020 - Newham Primary School Winners!
On Thursday, 2 of our Year 6 pupils took part in the Newham round of the national poetry competition: Poetry by Heart, held at Lister Community School. They performed 'A Smuggler's Song' and 'Colonel Fazakerley Butterworth-Toast' to a panel of 4 VIP judges: Adam Kammerling (poet), Allie Esiri (actress), Tim Shortis (AQA examiner) and Julie Blake (Cambridge Professor). They were competing against 17 other schools, which included secondary schools.
Both performances of the children were absolutely phenomenal and the judges, without hesitation, put them through to the the top 6. This meant that they had to then perform another poem in order to compete for a place in the National competition. The 2 pupils performed 'Macavity: The Mystery Cat' and 'Casabianca'. Their performances were once again tremendous. It is with great pride that we can announce that they then won the Newham poetry competition in the Primary School category! This means they have now been put forward to the National competition - so watch this space! Whatever the outcome may be, we are so pleased and proud of them both. Well done, St. Joachim's!
