Black History Project 2017
Our Black History project kicked off with a visit from Freshwater Theatre to take part in some cultural drama workshops. In the morning, nursery and reception went on a special Early Years story hunt starting in England with 'Amazing Grace', then onto Kenya in 'Handa's Surprise' and finally to the Caribbean in 'Island Counting'. The children loved taking part in all of the interactive challenges. Years 1 and 2 were exploring traditional African tales got very involved in all of the actions and were fantastic acting out the different animal roles. We celebrated the new African stories that we had learnt by creating a dance to some traditional music.
In the afternoon it was KS2's turn, the children discovered more about the abolition of slavery and the Windrush generation. They met many different heroes from Black History along the way!
The project culminated with our Choral poetry celebration performances with our partner school St Helen’s. Over the course of 2 days classes from both schools travelled to perform their poems in a celebration assembly. The children delivered passionate and powerful poetry performances based on their icon of study.
